Traffic is at a standstill following an accident on the M20.

The coast-bound carriageway is blocked from junction 7 on the A249 at Maidstone, near Detling Hill, to junction 8 on the A20 Ashford Road near Leeds Castle and the Maidstone Services.

A police spokesman said: “Officers were called at 3pm to a report of a collision between two vehicles between junction 6 and 7 on the M20.

“Emergency services are in attendance.”

Traffic is currently stationary, with motorists unable to get back on until junction 9 due to roadworks closing the entry slip road at junction 8.

A witness stuck in the queues has described seeing three ambulances and a fire engine drive past.

National Highways tweeted: “Traffic has been stopped on the #M20 eastbound between J7 #Maidstone and J9 (#A20) due to a collision.

“Please be patient we’ll try and get you moving again soon.”
